It's comforting to think that the horror of meeting a new species won't be one sided.
Finally caught up on your full archive. I like this one more than Datachasers. Probably because there's more explanation about the technology and the whole "first synthetic life form" thing resonates really well with me. Nicely done. Can't wait to see more.
I like them both a lot, but for different reasons. I like the whole "venturing into the unknown with no idea how we're gonna deal with it" that Luna Star creates.
And I with datachasers, Watching Rose and Cent try to keep the promise of it's tagline is impressive ("touching on the very fundamentals of humanity").
you are asking me to compare apricots to oranges! (ps. I like apricots, but I don't like apples)
I thought Datachasers was the same universe just a bit down the line. I didn't mean to imply DC wasn't good. Just that I really like the premise of this one.
Either way, I think reading this one gave me a better understanding of the synthetics that I was confused about when I started DC. Gotta to go back to DC again soon.
Luna Star takes place about 900 years before Datachasers so it is the same universe Galina is the "Prototype" of what would later become the Standard for Model fours.
Glad your enjoying it .. Luna Star despite its setting is waaay different than DC and DC has a much darker tone right now.
She totally could have finessed the 'synthetic lifeform' thing by fake-remembering things from the human Galina's life, up to the disaster, and then being 'confused' about what happened next but "I woke up again 3 years ago. My dad was 18 years older, but I ... wasn't. And I don't think I've gotten older since then. I don't know why."
She could have put a much stronger claim on being human than she did. But noooo, she's too nice a girl to engage in self-defensive lying.
And suddenly I'm reminded of the Monitor (343 Guilty Spark). I'm also reminded of a movie, the tittle of which I can't quite place, but which starred Robin Williams, who woke up to something strange in his face as well.
I am curious about this entity, though. It doesn't look like any of the other drones we've seen before and it's exterior shows very little of the utilitarian design that is typical for maintenance drones and security devices. It's awfully pointy, which suggests it may not be intended for user-friendliness: designs for library assistant droids are usually pleasantly rounded and unthreatening. The only reason I can think of to use a design like that is if it was intended to rely on maneuvering thrusters to move around, in which case that geometry would allow for a really impressive amount of maneuvering.
When I picked this I was thinking of maneuverability, its totally "weightless" being able to float and move in any direction quickly and with pinpoint accuracy :D
And yes I HAD to do the wake up looking at something wild .. :D
"And suddenly I'm reminded of the Monitor (343 Guilty Spark)..."
Funny thing is: Until last week I would have missed that reference. I have yet to play Halo. But last week I came across a Monitor model on ShareCG. So I read up on the Halo background story, Monitors and the Flood.
Well, the little 'bot did actually try to communicate in 5 different languages before Galina said "what?" and then freaked out.
Ah, all the discussions philosophers and politicians must have had about what the "first words" would be between human and ET's probably never thought of "What" and "AAAAHHHH" as possibilities. :D
"Ah, all the discussions philosophers and politicians must have had about what the "first words" would be between human and ET's probably never thought of "What" and "AAAAHHHH" as possibilities."
I always personally thought that this was indeed how it would happen. :D
Yes Generally speaking - Galina can speak almost six thousand languages fluently.. but normally for all others its < text > because the reader is hearing it though Galina occasionally she will use Russian slang or .. on occasion she might curse.. I think she might be up to a handful of bad words.. she got all those from going to "School" LOLO!
Heh. Both dearsom hideous creatures run screaming n opposite directions, both run halfway around the ship, meet on the other side, do it again ...
Eventually at least one of them is too tired to run any more, flops down on the deck, and they start to actually look at each other and then to talk...
Hrm ... the little robot has no legs to run with though.
But maybe Galina could do the running for both of them, and do an entire lap of the ship, only to come face to receptor with the 'bot again, and then do another "AAAAAAHHH" and then run in the other direction ?
Haha, perfect. The little guy sure is trying his darnedest to communicate. That's definitely a good sign. Also, it can be startled, which MAY also be a good sign.
Rose, the last panel is such a classic of 1st contact with such a brilliantly new spin that I believe it should be expanded and made into a Wallpaper, with the dialogue of course!... Please, PLEASEEE...! And please include 1024x768 size or that aspect ratio at least...
Further thought after some reflection and seeing the next post!...
Is this simply a mechanical device, or one with a spark, or some sort of 'intercom-link', or...? So, in other words is this strictly speaking First Contact?
There's a science fiction story from decades ago about aliens shaped like little barrels and the spaceman who first encounters them. He's saying "we are friends" and one of the aliens runs right into him and he says "ouch!" and all the aliens go around saying "We are friends ouch!" hahaha
Gali's okay! I'm so glad. I kind of expected the worst. BUT OH MY GOSH, that probe-bot-thing? (maybe with a tiny alien pilot inside?) is adorable. I love the different speech bubble and font usage to show the little probe trying to find something common in its language base to what it thinks Gali might communicate with. Very cool. :)
Also, nice use of motion lines to show that quick jolt there! :D (This page is so cute)
Thanks - I really had to think about that.. one bad thing about CGI is its very hard to get motion out of the charctres sometimes im really glad this paid off :D
I half expected Galina to make contact with a disembodied voice :
Alien : "Hello."
Galina : "Oh hello there, my name is Galina, I come in peace."
Alien : "I see, I am Plorx, and I was already at peace, until I was disturbed at least."
Galina : "Sorry to disturb you, but ... uhmm ... where are you?"
Alien : "You're standing on my pHlyphtrax"
Galina : "Sorry, sorry - sorry - wait, what is a pHlyphtrax?"
Alien : "You don't want to know."
Galina : "Oh c'mon!"
Alien : "You really, don't want to know."
Galina : "C'moooon!"
Alien : *sigh* "Allright, it's my waste excrement opening."
Galina : "Eeeeeewwwwww!"
Question is, is the alien also yelling out of fear or being startled....or is it just imitating Gali thinking that this is a standard greeting for her species?

Peace out!
As for a larger version of this .. Ill see what I can do :D

P.S. Thanks Cent for backing up my request!
Supah-smooth! XD
