just a side note .. "Those-that-watch" are Machines. Like One.

Tokyo Rose
For the Epiphyte-value of "machines", which means they're rather more alive than, say, a toaster. :D

Very nice page, lots of information there.

LOL and Dizz got a name right, Aloe. Was that AFTER his suggestion or before and thinking too much alike? :-D
DizzasterJuice 28th Apr 2015, 12:16 AM edit delete reply

He makes me want to break off a piece of him and rub it on my skin.
Tokyo Rose 28th Apr 2015, 7:08 PM edit delete reply

I laughed so hard when Dizz made that comment, just because I'd already had the name written down in my notes :D

*Breaks off a piece of Aloe and rubs it on Rose's nose.*
No one knows plants that grow like aloe-nose-Rose!

I still say there's a dirty thought hidden in there. (^_^)
Centcomm 28th Apr 2015, 4:29 AM edit delete reply

Actually the name was come up with several weeks ago :D You can thank Rose for that :D
Haegan2005 28th Apr 2015, 12:21 AM edit delete reply

Well, it is not canon until they post it!

OOoo :D
They're so cool and strange looking.
Great alien designs.
Centcomm 28th Apr 2015, 4:30 AM edit delete reply

Thank you .. as you can see there are more forms than the Green space babe .. although that one IS the most popular :D
Stormwind13 28th Apr 2015, 6:20 PM edit delete reply

Want more Green Space Babes!!! :-D

Edit: Though the others look amazing too. :-D
Kitty 28th Apr 2015, 11:05 PM edit delete reply
I want a Green Space Hunk! Ash doesn't do it for me ;)
Spelledeg 28th Apr 2015, 2:47 AM edit delete reply

So behind on commenting on this D:!!!

I love the backstory and thought that's gone into these guys! Gali's getting an ear and an eyeful of new information and this is so very cool. These are becoming some of my favorite aliens by far. (Oh I can't wait to see how diffusing/turning off/putting to sleep the machine goes.)
Centcomm 28th Apr 2015, 4:32 AM edit delete reply

Well they are the first and best friends of Humanity as a whole .. there are a few other races .. but we haven't really touched on that yet in eather strip :D
DLKmusic 28th Apr 2015, 11:52 PM edit delete reply

Well, there was a brief mention of the Crians during the S&R mission in data chasers, but my impression was that the Crians didn't have much respect for humans.

Wow, beautiful...

^_^ thank you!
anonymous coward 28th Apr 2015, 5:09 AM edit delete reply
Oy, uncanny valley is right: Why bother getting details like pretending to have a similar skeleton with skin stretched over it pattern to humans when you're going to half-ass other surface anatomy questions? Is this limitations of the medium or it's saying something about Lotus?
CptKerion 28th Apr 2015, 5:33 PM edit delete reply
I believe it may be as result of the transformations being 'in progress' or something to that effect.
Tokyo Rose 28th Apr 2015, 7:11 PM edit delete reply

CptKerion nailed it; Lotus looks unfinished because she is unfinished. She's not one of those who would be expected to meet with humans immediately under normal circumstances.
anonymous coward 28th Apr 2015, 7:56 PM edit delete reply
That does suggest an interesting question: What do they look like when they aren't dressing up for a foreign audience?
Tokyo Rose 29th Apr 2015, 3:03 AM edit delete reply

See Ash and Aloe there? Tip of the leafy green iceberg ;)

I find the leaves part a little surprising since they're an adaptation of sessile plants in moist circumstances to enable them to maximize potential surface area to gather solar photons for photosynthesis. It wouldn't be quite so helpful for these Epiphytes since they can 1) reposition themselves manually for optimum light capture, 2) probably aren't going to be spending weeks at a time immobile, and 3) would need instantaneous/continuous access to a large, reliable supply of water to engage in much photosynthesis using chlorophyll. I mean, consider that the standard glucose result of photosynthesis is water with a bit of carbon stolen from atmospheric carbon dioxide, but still mostly water by original mass: Where would they get all that water from if they're not floating around as pond scum when they aren't terrestrially rooted?
Centcomm 29th Apr 2015, 6:54 AM edit delete reply

A lot of the time Epiphytes generate leaves and other things like flowers simply because "they can" its a aesthetic choice .. they have ample access to water and other things to make growing whatever they wish easy. Elder Epipytes generate leaves as well. you might even say that flowers and leaves are the Epip version of "bling"
anonymous coward 29th Apr 2015, 6:34 PM edit delete reply
Well, the flowers makes sense because those are sex organs (or are they? do Epiphytes have bees?) and humans definitely show off through gratuitous display an semi-display of their sexual characteristics. The leaves is still a little surprising unless they're actually ablative stuff intended to be spare biomass and a visible indicator of being in condition.

This gets better and better.

CptKerion 28th Apr 2015, 5:42 PM edit delete reply
What do the epiphytes do for toasters or pieces of equipment of similar broad nature (see: being capable of reasoning gains little)?
Tokyo Rose 28th Apr 2015, 7:16 PM edit delete reply

For the Epiphytes, almost everything more complicated than a hammer or a screwdriver has some degree of "life" to it, but those pieces of equipment don't have minds. They're still sensitive to the Epiphytes' psionic abilities, but only so far as is necessary to, say, get that piece of bread toasted to perfection instead of burning it. :)
Lukkai 29th Apr 2015, 8:42 PM edit delete reply

I think the really interesting question here is do the Epiphytes even eat and if yes, what do they eat?
kitty 29th Apr 2015, 10:19 PM edit delete reply
Oxygen and solar energy?
Matt Knab 28th Apr 2015, 6:43 PM edit delete reply

Just got here, and already a sizable party!
Tokyo Rose 28th Apr 2015, 7:16 PM edit delete reply

"You must gather your party before venturing forth." :D

(In this case, there's only one going along with her, though.)

I realised this afternoon that Galina is now a coffee addict. She's too far away from the Luna Star to nip back for some coffee so what's going to happen once she starts getting withdrawl symptoms. On the plus side she's only just started so she may not be that addicted.

OTOH, I can just imagine the following:

Galina: Jet, can you control the flyer remotely?

Jet: Yes, why?

Galina: Could you fly it back to Luna Star and send EDICT back with some coffee, please?

Jet: I could bring it to you.

Galina: Much as I would love that...the Epiphytes are telepathic and I get the impression that it's rude to broadcast your thoughts to them. They can't read synth minds.

Also, until I get this thing fixed, only me and EDICT can get close to the beacon.
