Aye, congratulations on finishing a webcomic.

Lord only knows how many falls by on the wayside.
StellarJay 29th Jul 2015, 4:20 AM edit delete reply

Finishing a story does seem to be a rare thing. Most of the time it's like what Da Vinci said about his art: "A painting is never finished, only abandoned." I much prefer a story to come to an end than to be abandoned without any type of conclusion.
While I will miss updates to *this* story, I will continue to enjoy Datachasers and having Staff and Sword pick up again.
Centcomm 29th Jul 2015, 11:22 PM edit delete reply

it may take a bit to get back going on Staff and sword. I need to recover a few files that were lost when I had HD crashes .. I had to recover the DC and LS stuff but I did let some of the S&S stuff fall off .. I do have Tamaree's files however.
highlander55 28th Jul 2015, 12:19 AM edit delete reply

The ending was superb and thoughtfully done. Thank you ladies for the adventure you provided with thoughtful dialog, CGI that continually improved and characters that came alive in the telling. BRAVO!!

Thank you! - I for one am proud that it turned out as good as it did.. its been a bumpy ride at times :D
Sheela 29th Jul 2015, 2:42 AM edit delete reply

It will always be a bumpy ride, after all, what challenge is there in following a railroad track ?

Much more satisfying this way, and fun too when it goes well. :)

Agreed Sheela

*standing ovation*

Now, it just needs to be formatted for PRINT.

:D
Centcomm 28th Jul 2015, 12:33 AM edit delete reply

wonder how much a collected volume would cost.. :D
velvetsanity 28th Jul 2015, 2:53 AM edit delete reply

Depends on a number of factors...page count, binding, type of paper, hardcover vs softcover, amount of ink needed...
Mark_L_A 28th Jul 2015, 2:49 PM edit delete reply

Do it as a Trade Paperback. Also you can set it up so the readers can go to places that print on demand and order, although that way is rather expensive.

But, Kick Starter Time? and an extra $20.00 for the autographed copy?
Centcomm 28th Jul 2015, 3:28 PM edit delete reply

its a thought .. :D
Sheela 29th Jul 2015, 2:46 AM edit delete reply

Alternatively, format for an E-reader of some sort, such as the iPad, and then you'd have a good basis if you'd ever go print.

It's a lot of work though.
And the force will be strong to "optimize" pages, especially once you look at your early artwork.
Centcomm 29th Jul 2015, 11:20 PM edit delete reply

Im actually pretty happy with the Luna Star Art all the way to the end. I dont feel any raging need to fix it. unlike the first 500 pages of Datachasers >_<

How does the HUGO Award work? Can anyone make a nomination? If so, to whom?
Mark_L_A 28th Jul 2015, 10:30 PM edit delete reply

To nominate for the Hugo you need to Join the World Science Fiction Society, by beoming a Voting Member of WorldCon. This year it is at Saquan (sasquan.org). I joined and already cast my ballot for this years awards. Luna-Star is eligible for nomination for NEXT year (2016), so nominations can start to be made next year in May of 2016, for MidAmerica Con (midamericon2.org) a supporting membership which also allows you to nominate and vote is $50.00 and is open to anyone in the world. You can nominate, and vote and you get either the whole work or an extract of the nominated works so you can read them before you vote for them. You can also convert your supporting/voting membership to an attending membership where you actually go to the convention itself.

For more info go to The Hugo Awards blog FAQ: www.thehugoawards.org/hugo-faq/

Sheela 29th Jul 2015, 2:57 AM edit delete reply

Aha, I already pre-empetively re-read it .. twice!

I think .. and it was in chunks ... at random times - But still! :)
I *might* have a problem with binge reading!

Heck, that was how Catsservant lured me here, he told me in a comment over on Space Pulp, that there was a big archive in Datachasers and dared me to binge it.
Which I did, and very successfully too, I might add. And, well, then I binged the other stuff they made too, including this one. :)
Stormwind13 4th Jan 2016, 8:27 PM edit delete reply

So cattservant is to BLAME for inflicting you on us? I knew catt's hate dogs, but what did *I* do to him to suffer like that?!? :-D
The Old Scribe 28th Jul 2015, 1:11 AM edit delete reply

That was excellent! I burned through it in two days and loved every minute of it. You two did a fantastic job. The sets, characters, plot and dialogue were top of the line. Given the fact it ran concurrently with your other on-line graphic novels makes it even more amazing. Kudos!

I came in somewhere around the seventh or eighth page and and fav'ed it from there on. Sorry if my comments may have been a little silly sometimes, but that's just me. All in all though, this has been an all around great story and a very comprehensive Sci-Fi romp through a fascinating world.
You certainly get my seal of approval (with a months supply of fish).

yay fishies! :D My kitty thanks you for the fishies :D
Sheela 29th Jul 2015, 3:00 AM edit delete reply

But .. what are the seals gonna eat them ?

Military Grade MRE's ?
xpacetrue 28th Jul 2015, 1:37 AM edit delete reply

Yes, a very beautiful ending. Well done, all around!

Galina was very unique - neither android nor entirely human. But, in some ways, her positronic/human hybrid brain reminds me of Dr. Silver's situation.

BTW: I wonder if we'll get to see an Epiphyte "android Speaker of Words" in Datachasers some day?

PS: Why did Galina and Jet adopt only? Not possible? She may be a synthetic person, but she is part human and has the DNA of Dr. Kotko's lost daughter. Or am I missing something?
HiFranc 28th Jul 2015, 2:10 AM edit delete reply

If you go back to ... Gets Better and read the exchange starting:

Mark_L_A 14th Jul 2015, 1:42 AM

It's all explained there.
Eldoran 28th Jul 2015, 3:30 AM edit delete reply
Well technically it should be possible - today's technology isn't far off to actually convert cells to eggs - http://io9.com/new-research-suggests-women-can-make-sperm-and-men-can-1180163758 . And from there it should be possible - in vitro fertilisation and surrogate mother does work today...
Tokyo Rose 28th Jul 2015, 4:54 AM edit delete reply

Galina lacks the facility to reproduce as per normal human procedure. She and Jet made the decision to adopt children in need of a loving, stable home rather than opting for the vanity of technologically-aided reproduction.
Centcomm 28th Jul 2015, 11:58 AM edit delete reply

Pretty much what Rose said. Galina and Jet got a HUGE happy feeling from giving kids who would never have had a chance a GOOD home with two loving parents and a hell of a extended family..

(( Mommy why does granma have flowers all over her..

Galina : Sorry honey its spring .. they go kinda nuts .. I think shes looking to create offspring.
Wheres the daddy plant?
Galina: ( looks at Jet )
Jet: ( quietly ) I am not telling Shasha that Tigerlily is effectively having sex with everyone in the area..
Galina ( looks at Jet then back at Shasha starts laughing ) You just did!
Jet: Facepalms.. damn it
Dragonrider 28th Jul 2015, 6:59 PM edit delete reply

Whoops nice one.
Sheela 29th Jul 2015, 3:03 AM edit delete reply

Bwa ha ha ... yeah, explaining how Epiphyte sex works to a kid would be pretty funny. :D
Mark_L_A 28th Jul 2015, 1:38 AM edit delete reply

So sad to see it done. Very glad you left it open ended. Also very Glad Gali and Jet adopted kids.

On the open ended issue, I think you should revisit Galina AND Jet in the future as they raise their children, and deal with the Luna Independence conflict.
Tokyo Rose 28th Jul 2015, 2:58 AM edit delete reply

That's actually an interesting idea, but right now there aren't any firm plans for another part of Gali's story. :D
Centcomm 28th Jul 2015, 11:53 AM edit delete reply

My only issue is now that we have set down HOW and WHEN Galina died .. theirs no worry if we did another story does she survive .. ect ect ect
Mark_L_A 28th Jul 2015, 3:01 PM edit delete reply

True but the main focus could be one of Gali and Jet's kids. I'm not saying that Galina and Jet would be secondary characters, but the main story would revolve around their kids or one of their kids in particular.

ETA: also with her and Jet living so long, they wouldn't have necessarily adopted all of their children in a close time frame, they could have spread out the adoptions over 100 or more years, meaning their kids could be involved in the socio-political situation possibly for the next 300-500 years

Especially with the Luna Independence issue.

I highly doubt any of Galina and Jet's children would be anything but highly intelligent, motivated and learned.
That one guy 28th Jul 2015, 7:58 PM edit delete reply
Galina's narration mentioned things "in the future." Definitely several places on Aster the way she talked definitely indicated that it was being re-told and that she'd survived for a minimum of months afterward to have more experience on Aster. So the knowledge that she'd live through it wouldn't be different from this story.
Sheela 29th Jul 2015, 3:06 AM edit delete reply

This page is pretty spoileriffic, in the context of making a "Chapter II" of Galina's life.
Lukkai 29th Jul 2015, 12:43 PM edit delete reply

It does however set a number of possibilities for other storylines in that timeline with Galina reverting to supporting cast.
Tokyo Rose 30th Jul 2015, 7:09 PM edit delete reply

It is indeed spoilerriffic in that sense, but can you say with a straight face that you wouldn't want to see how we tell it? :D
That one guy 30th Jul 2015, 7:34 PM edit delete reply
Does tail wagging count as breaking a straight face look, or not?
El Cid 28th Jul 2015, 1:47 AM edit delete reply

Wow, congrats on seeing this voluminous tome to its conclusion. It's depressingly rare to see a webcomic run its entire course from beginning to end, so it's a testimony to your devotion and vision that you were able to see this all the way through, and the webcomics community is all the better for it. Congrats again, and keep up the good work!

*hugs Gali*

Tokyo Rose 28th Jul 2015, 4:58 AM edit delete reply

She lived around TWO HUNDRED YEARS, what do you mean "so soon"?? :D
Fjolsvith 28th Jul 2015, 11:33 AM edit delete reply

I am betting that Galina didn't die, but is still alive: "To honor Galina's memory, the Epiphytes construct their android "Speakers of Words" in her image."
Centcomm 28th Jul 2015, 11:51 AM edit delete reply

I can say with assurity that Galina Kotko passed away. She didn't want to live anymore after Jet died. not to mention her organics were failing.

The Epiphytes respected her wishes. and did not try to save her - She lives on in memory ( as in they remember her interactions with them ) of the Seed and Tide ( in the epiphyte memory ) and out of respect they built androids that "looked" like her Blond hair , petite , ect.. after asking if Galina minded .. Galina allowed it after being assured that the "speaker of words " wopuld have Her own mind and be allowed to choose her own name. The Epiphytes agreed. a "living Memory" is very common to them as Epipytes rarely die from natural causes. They turn into freaking TREES! and have LOOONG Memory's. Most of the Epiphytes in Luna Star are still alive in the time of Datachasers.
mjkj 29th Jul 2015, 7:51 AM edit delete reply

Rose, I expected her to live about 8 or 900 years - so, 200 years are quite soon in comparison...
Tokyo Rose 30th Jul 2015, 7:10 PM edit delete reply

Okay, yeah, with THAT lifespan, 200 years would have been "too soon". But she really wasn't going to live anywhere near that long anyway--human tissues and organs do wear out.
Sheela 1st Aug 2015, 7:25 PM edit delete reply

On a sidenote, this means that Jet also lived about 200 years.
In fact, he would have been a bit older than Galina, as she was only 2 years old when she met him.

Terry and Krissy,

Thanks so much for your story. Luna Star is arguably the best of it's kind ever. Never before have I related to, or actually cared about, characters in a story as much as this one.

The story was steady from beginning to end. The art started good and matured to great.

Thanks for sharing your talent and imagination with all of us.
chk 28th Jul 2015, 3:42 PM edit delete reply

Oh, and you didn't kill Galina as it looked like you would for awhile. Thanks.

But then she got better. :)

Alright, I'll be happy with FOUR then, Rose. :-D
Centcomm 28th Jul 2015, 8:13 PM edit delete reply

well there IS a loop hole to that.. it requires a large amount of cash at Patreon . then Rose cant say no.
Stormwind13 28th Jul 2015, 8:45 PM edit delete reply

Somebody just GIVE them a salary... then we can get 220 (5 x 44 weeks, so they have vacation time). :-D
DLKmusic 29th Jul 2015, 3:03 AM edit delete reply

Actually, Dragon, they have specific goals they are trying to meet, and if we can get more contributors, it won't be that much for anyone to contribute, but it will give them a decent cash flow.

I mean, seriously.... LS and DC are two of the best comics on the web, and it's got a decent following. If we get even 1/3 of the subscribers to contribute 2 bucks a month, that would be a huge help for them.

One final point for this blatant plug for the girls here. They are incredibly consistant with the 3 comics a week. I do follow a lot of comics, but these two are among the very few that have this much output and aren't consistantly missing publication dates.

Anyone who's reading this, please consider contributing.

(sorry girls, the pitchman in me got out, it's a living hell to get him back into his cage)

This has been a story that I have always waited for the new pages to come out. The art work has always been great, and the story line drew you into the world and made you invested in the story. I will miss it and hope that it stays online archived somewhere for future readers to find and enjoy. Thank you again for sharing your art and soul even with us.

Read the whole story in one glorious session. I have been following Datachasers for quite a while now, and never suspected this existed. I actually stumbled upon it via topwebcomics :)

Thanks a bundle for sharing this, it's a great story - I giggled and even cried a little.

Your very welcome :D and yes keeping the readers guessing is hard sometimes .. our readers seem to be mind readers at times.
Sheela 1st Aug 2015, 7:38 PM edit delete reply

No, no, not mindreaders ... we just make so many guesses that we end up using brute force to figure it out. >_<

Hi!

First comment from me and I actually only found Luna Star a couple of weeks ago. I can't say I had read any 3D-rendered comics before but this one hooked me from the go and I binge read Luna Star over a couple of days.

I actually finished my binge on the page where Galina succumbs to her injuries and "dies". Now I know she recovered and lived on long after but at that point it actually felt like an incredibly appropriate, and bittersweet, ending of the "I made it, I can die happy"-kind!

It is kind of weird to come to a comic just as it is about to end but on the upside, I got to read the entire "book" in (almost) one go!

Great job, and Congratulations to the Finishing!

Now, let's see where Datachasers are going…
Centcomm 1st Aug 2015, 11:17 AM edit delete reply

^_^ Im very happy to hear that .. CGI comics get a lot of flack for being lazy . or easy.. Its actually neither :D Im very glad we could get the readers to empathize and enjoy Galina's story :D

Datachasers is going places trust me :D
PaulRein 1st Aug 2015, 3:27 PM edit delete reply
Yeah, I can see that!

I actually found "By Staff and Sword" first, on ComicRockets Fantasy index. Then I noted that it was on hiatus due to something called "Luna Star"… and while reading that, I learn that it is a prequel of sorts to something called "Datachasers"…aaand roughly 1600 pages later I'm well and truly hooked! :-D
Sheela 1st Aug 2015, 7:42 PM edit delete reply

Ha ha ha, you suffer from binge-reading too ?

Man, with me it was all Catsservants fault for linking me to Datachasers and I ended up binge-reading the whole she-bang in one day.

It was worth it though. :)
Don B. 6th Aug 2015, 4:33 AM edit delete reply
Ha! I know what you mean Sheela. Could hardly see straight for a few days after binge reading all three comics.
Kingsley 3rd Aug 2015, 9:47 PM edit delete reply
I don't often comment on web comics but feel that one is necessary here.

Thank you to Tokyo Rose and Centcomm for wonderful story telling and beautiful art. I, for one, have thoroughly enjoyed this story and will look forward to any future Datachasers spin-offs you chose to produce in the future. I will of course remain a dedicated Datachasers fan.

Thank you again and all the best for your future endevours.
